PRIMARY DETAIL

  • Base salary from $76,868 - $107,956 per annum based on relevant nursing experience year level and our Enterprise Agreement pay grade, plus access to salary packaging via Maxxia to maximise your take-home pay (including venue hire, meals, entertainment and novated leasing).

Are you an experienced scrub/scout nurse with a passion for cardiac and vascular surgery? Macquarie University Hospital is seeking a skilled Registered Nurse to join our Theatre department on a full-time, permanent basis. This is an outstanding opportunity to be part of a highly specialised surgical team within Australia's only university-owned academic hospital, where clinical excellence, innovation and professional growth go hand in hand.

At Macquarie University Hospital, our cardiac and vascular surgical program encompasses a broad and complex case mix, including coronary artery bypass grafts, mitral valve repairs, lobectomies and a growing range of robotic-assisted procedures. You will work alongside leading surgeons, anaesthetists and allied health professionals in a collaborative, supportive environment that values every member of the perioperative team.

About the Role

In this role, you will support cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries as a scrub/scout nurse, playing an essential part in ensuring procedures are conducted smoothly and safely. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and setting up surgical instruments and specialised equipment for cardiac, vascular and thoracic procedures.

  • Performing preoperative safety checks and ensuring compliance with perioperative standards and protocols.

  • Providing skilled scrub and scout support to the surgical team throughout procedures.

  • Maintaining accurate documentation and contributing to clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborating effectively with the multidisciplinary surgical team to deliver safe, high-quality patient care.

  • Participating in on-call duties as part of our commitment to providing 24/7 surgical support. Flexibility and responsiveness are essential, as on-call duties are a critical component of ensuring emergency and after-hours care.

Extensive training and orientation will be provided to the successful candidate to support your transition into the role and ongoing development within our specialised surgical program.

About You

You are a dedicated and adaptable Registered Nurse with demonstrated experience in cardiac and vascular surgical procedures. You are a strong communicator who builds effective working relationships and you are committed to your own professional growth and the advancement of nursing practice.

Selection Criteria

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA.

  • Minimum one year of experience as a scrub and/or scout nurse in cardiac and vascular surgical procedures (experience in respiratory/thoracic surgery is desirable).

  • Ability to participate in on-call rotations, providing urgent support outside of regular hours as required.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills with a proven ability to establish sound relationships within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Well-developed computer skills including the use of electronic medical records systems, Microsoft Word, Excel and web-based platforms.

  • Proven ability to prioritise and manage competing demands in a fast-paced surgical environment.

  • Relevant experience in coordinating a cardiothoracic service will be highly regarded.
